Pet-Friendly Fabrics for Furniture

Approximately 70% of U.S. households have a pet. About 45% of Americans share their homes with dogs and almost 30% are cat owners. While pet ownership is a rewarding experience, we do have to consider how to keep them safe and happy and protect our furniture from them. Choosing pet-friendly fabrics can bring you peace of mind where this matter is concerned. Here are some choices for your pets:

Microfiber and microsuede

Anyone with cats will tell you they are the sweetest pets but that they can have destructive tendencies. Most importantly, they destroy furniture when they engage in regular feline scratching behavior. But there is a simple fix: Replacing your existing furniture with pieces covered in microfiber, microsuede or even velvet can deter most cats from scratching furniture surfaces. If your cats can't hook their claws into the fabric, it's a less satisfying experience when they act out. To better ensure this strategy pays off, always be sure to put cat-appropriate scratching surfaces around the house.

Leather

Leather is a popular choice for furniture, especially for those who have pets, for several reasons. Its durable material can withstand scratches and tears from pet claws. Unlike some other fabrics, leather does not easily fray or develop holes. It's naturally resistant to spills, stains and odors. Many people love leather because it's a comfortable and timeless material that looks great in many decor styles.

Polyester

Another good fabric choice is polyester. As a synthetic fabric, it is relatively durable, easy to clean and affordable. It also comes in assorted colors and styles, making it a versatile choice for furniture. However, there are some potential drawbacks to consider regarding pets. Polyester may not be as resistant to scratches and tears, so it may show wear and tear more quickly. It is also not as stain resistant as other fabrics, and spills may soak into the material more quickly, making it more difficult to clean. It can also trap pet odors. But because polyester is a more affordable choice, it can be easily replaced.

Performance fabrics

Performance fabrics are specially designed for furniture, offering a range of benefits such as durability, stain resistance, easy maintenance and comfort. These fabrics are engineered to withstand wear and tear and can be made from polyester, nylon or olefin materials. You can choose from several name brands, including Ultrasuede and Sunbrella.

Use blankets

Of course, there is another tried-and-true trick regarding pets and furniture. Blankets are an easy solution that can prevent scratches, stains and odors from becoming permanent features of your furniture. Throwing a blanket over the furniture so your pet can snuggle will give you a way to wash and replace the surfaces regularly and avoid damage to your furniture.
