All That Glitters Is Gold: The Gilded Age Decor Revival

It's not called the Gilded Age without a good reason. The hallmark of this decor style is opulence and glamour displayed through ornate gold leaf furnishings and architecture. This over-the-top interior style is gaining interest among fans of both "Bridgerton" and "The Gilded Age." Of course, very few people live like that anymore, but nevertheless, designers are seeking ways to blend lavish Gilded Age style touches creatively and judiciously in sparser contemporary spaces. Here are some 19th-century-inspired decor ideas to help you live in grand Gilded Age style:

Front halls and vestibules

These are often overlooked today though they were once important places for receiving guests and setting the tone for the rest of the home. The first thing to do is to organize and declutter the area so that it is free of possessions such as dirty shoes, backpacks, dog leashes and coats. These items can be stored and concealed behind stand-alone storage cabinets. Set a small table below a gilded-frame mirror near the front door to receive mail and keys in a decorative silver tray placed on top of it. A sparkling chandelier proportioned to the room will impress guests.

Living rooms and dining rooms

Celebrate the Gilded Age aesthetic in these key spaces. Color is an essential element, and here you will want to choose furnishings in rich colors such as burgundy, royal blue or emerald green for the living room. Architectural details such as crown molding, wainscoting or ceiling medallions should not be overlooked. Furniture in this period was heavy dark wood with carved detailing. If this is not to your taste, look to include other elements in the room such as draperies, ornate picture frames or faux Tiffany-style stained glass lighting. An intricate Persian or Oriental rug is a way to add texture and opulence.

For the dining room, invest in elegant tabletop accessories. Gilded dinnerware and glassware, silverware, crystal candleholders or a dazzling chandelier provide just the right touch. Decorate the walls with opulent fabric wallpaper such as richly colored damask, brocade or silk. Excellent reproductions are available to choose from.

Bedroom pizazz

While we may not have the luxury of enjoying a leisurely breakfast in bed each morning, we can add some decorative elements to glamorize our bedrooms. Start with bed linens in chenille damask, pleated velvet and faux-fur textures to instantly communicate opulence and comfort. Add lots of sumptuous tasseled throw pillows to complete the look. You might want to add an elegant faux silver serving tray and tea service to keep on your night table to use on your days off.

The key to successfully carrying off the Gilded Age look is to apply it in moderation. You will not want to overwhelm our modern aesthetics with the over-the-top opulence of the past. To get started, choose a few elements that capture the essence of the period to create balance with your existing decor.
